The Key – 26th May 2014

This week

On Monday night we will welcome our Guest Speaker: Mr Nick Terrell, Chief of Staff (aka Office Manager) to the Hon. Dr Andrew Leigh, Member for Fraser.

This is part of our exploration of vocational service in the ACT as many Canberrans work directly, or indirectly, as part of the national political process. Nick may be able to describe the nature of this ‘behind the scene’ vocation – entry pathways, working conditions, highs and lows, aspirations and the role of
‘staffers’.

This is an opportunity for members and guests to ask about what happens when sound office procedures and ethics come under pressure politically and how staff manage a member’s workload in terms of priorities, potential pitfalls, etc. If he doesn’t raise it himself, perhaps a question on what drew Nick into
politics, might be useful.

Last week

Last Monday night we held a Club Assembly & Board Meeting and worked through our Agenda and updated the Action List.

Club Updates

BBQ

Members reported that they had been busy at Magnet Mart last Sunday. Terry will take over the preparation of The Key while Liz is on holidays June & July.

ShelterBox

Members will be aware that earlier this year our Club donated $US1,000 to the ShelterBox Fund. Our box, no 12369 (Australia), was delivered to Bolivia on 7 April 2014 to assist victims of recent major flooding.

This is the locality of Clisa, in Cochabamba flooded by heavy rains.

Y Engage

Following our joint meeting with Aurora Gungahlin on 12th May when we welcomed speakers who work with youth in the area, more information can be found on the Y Engage facebook page and the relevant section of Northside Community Service, which give a good look into the day-to day activities of the program, are www.facebook.com/Y.Engage.ACT and http://www.northside.asn.au/young-people/young-people
