The Key – 18th August 2014

Next Monday

Next Monday we will hold a Club Assembly/Board meeting in the dining room
of the Soccer Club. Members are asked to advise the Secretary, Sandra, if
they are unable to attend.

Last week

Last Monday – PP Kiri Tennent was our Guest Speaker. Kiri works with the
organisation Just Better Care, a provider of in-home support services, that
enables people to live independently, maintain their personal and social
connections and enjoy a better quality of life. Specifically, Kiri’s role involves
coordination of services for clients with disabilities to ensure they receive the
support they need.

Kiri was able to explain the complexities of the National Disability Insurance
Scheme and answered a wide range of questions. It was interesting to learn
more about the roll-out in the ACT which commenced on 1 July 2014 and will
continue for two years. The ACT is the first region that will roll out to all groups
and this will be staged across the two-year program.

Y-Engage (Gungahlin Youth) Members of our Club and the Aurora Rotary
Club will recall an excellent meeting when we welcomed youth workers from
Northside Community Service and Anglicare ACT who gave a presentation on
their youth service, the Y-Engage program.

Following that meeting, our Club agreed that a significant donation received
from a generous member of our local community would be given to the YEngage program to address identified service gaps for young people in the
Gungahlin region and improve long term outcomes.

Northside Community Service has expressed their appreciation of the donation and will report back on their achievements. Our members are keen to continue to build the relationship with the organisation.

Rotary Club of Gungahlin Vocational Excellence Award

President Ian was pleased to present a Vocational Excellence Award certificate to our local volunteer Rural Fire Service. Late last year our members were pleased to have several members of the Brigade speak at our Club. Also, earlier this year the Brigade arranged for members and guests to visit them at the Joint Emergency Services Centre to see their vehicles and equipment located in their headquarters.

Below is Simon Amalos receiving the certificate on behalf of the Brigade
Captain, Peter Beutel.
