Heading to my Rotary meeting tonight, I was struggling to keep my eyes open. With a lot going on lately, and a few too many late nights, it had all caught up with me and I was exhausted. A friend suggested maybe I should skip this one meeting, just to have an evening to myself to try and catch up on some rest. But I decided to push on as this is a commitment I’ve made to the club and to myself.
And now I’m home and my eyes are still stinging with tiredness, but my brain is on fire and I’m so full of energy! This is the gift that Rotary brings to me. I don’t want to rest when there is so much good work I can be doing with my fellow Rotarians, in our local community and internationally.
The new Rotary year has just begun, and the theme of the year is “Be a Gift to the World”.
“Every one of us has something to give – whoever we are, whatever our place in life. We can give our talent, our knowledge, our abilities, and our effort; we can give our dedication and our devotion. Through Rotary, we can take these gifts and make a genuine difference in the lives of others and in our world”
— Rotary International President 2015-2016, K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran
At our meeting tonight, I was once again impressed by the many gifts of our various club members, and it was so exciting to see how these gifts are all coming together to plan an incredible year of service for our club. With international projects, local events and projects, programs for young people and recognition for people who do their jobs well, we are making a genuine positive difference in the world.
Some of our members can contribute their excellent knowledge of certain areas thanks to their careers and vocations, while others use their talents to keep the club running so well, and others dedicate their time, energy and tow-bars to doing to the hands-on work.
Our Club President Sandra asked us some time back to list our gifts and talents that we can bring to Rotary, and just between you and me, I didn’t submit mine. I’m hoping she didn’t notice (but I think she probably did). It wasn’t that I was intentionally ignoring her request, but simply that I couldn’t really think of what gifts I could bring. I’m realising now, that with a club like ours that works so well as a team, all the small gifts really add up into something amazing. We’re going places this year… and we’re looking for more people to join us and be a part of the excitement.
What gifts can you share to help make a difference in the world?
