2014 Vocational Awards
Last Monday we held our Vocational Awards meeting.  The two awardees and their partners joined us, as well as Beth Peters from the ACT Chamber of Commerce and Business.  We also welcomed the attendance of AG Graeme Kinraid.

Pres. Ian spoke about the role of Vocational Service in Rotary, including our focus on;

  • Adhering to and promoting the highest ethical standards in all occupations
  • Recognising the value of all useful occupations,
  • Contributing one’s vocational talents to meeting the needs of the community

He noted that on this occasion we celebrated and recognised two local residents who have contributed their vocational skills to the significant betterment of their community.   The awardees for 2014 are;

  • 2014 Shield – Susan Kemp, Coordinator of the Mustard Seed Community Pantry
  • 2014 Certificate – Anna Plotkin, Staff member, Soul Pattinson Chemist, Gungahlin

Ian spoke to Susan’s award and Bob spoke to Anna’s.  Beth Peters spoke about the importance of building and retaining linkages between vocational stakeholders.

A Thank You from the Gold Creek World Challenge Team,

I am writing to let you know we are back from our trip.  It was the best experience of our lives and we’ll never forget it.  The orphanage (in Cambodia) we helped out appreciated all the work we did for them and the money we raised with your help enabled them to do a project they’ve been wanting to do for a long time.  We would like to thank you so much for all your support and donations for the trip.
David (Year 10 participating student)

David is modest about the Students’ contributions.  He was one of several stuIMG_7855 reddents who joined our Club’s BBQ team to raise money for the trip (see at right).  The Team is keen to speak to a Club meeting about what they did and what they learned.  The Club was very happy indeed to make a contribution to such a worthwhile and well-run program.  – President Ian

The Key, Mon 3rd November 2014

Next Monday we will meet at the Soccer Club for the 2014 Gungahlin Rotary Vocational Awards.

To Rotarians, Vocational Service is one of our foundation stones and we focus on:

  • Adhering to and promoting the highest ethical standards in all occupations
  • Recognising the value of all useful occupations,
  • Contributing one’s vocational talents to meeting the needs of the community

October is the month when Rotary clubs are asked to focus on the vocational avenue of service and in the past couple of years we have recognised the contributions of a teacher, a dentist and an automotive technician.

Members, partners & guests enjoyed the company of other Rotarians to raise funds for youth programs

In 2014 Club members have again submitted the names of members of the community to whom recognition should be accorded and as October draws to a close, we will celebrate and recognise two local residents who have contributed their vocational skills to the significant betterment of their community.  Beth Peters, Partnership Broker for the ACT Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will present the awards.

Magnet Mart BBQs for 2015

The Club recently received confirmation of our success in gaining monthly BBQ dates in 2015.  Although this will keep us busy it will certainly give us valuable funds and community exposure – a great outcome.

… and from President Ian …

Annual Meeting of Gungahlin Rotary

Monday 17 November 7pm, Belconnen Soccer Club, McKellar

Members are reminded of this important event in the Club’s calendar and our need for a strong and active Board for the 2015-2016 Rotary year.  The Presiding Officer has called for nominations for the positions of;

  • President (nominee for 2016-2017 – taking up the Board position in July 2015 as President-elect)
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Directors (up to six)

In addition, President Elect Sandra has sought expressions of interest from members for the many responsibilities that need to be carried out to keep the Club functioning well.  Each and every member of the Club needs to consider this and respond positively.

New Gungahlin Rotary Website launched!

This past week saw the launch of our new Club website.  It’s a whole new bright look, very much geared to attracting greater interest in our activities, placing us squarely within our community and displaying the opportunities that membership of Rotary can provide.

The Club expressed its sincere thanks to former member Geoff Windsor, currently in India, for all the voluntary work he has put into this task (which would have been very expensive to purchase commercially).  Check it out.

District Conference 14-16 November

Gungahlin Rotary looks like having half its membership at the weekend event – a great commitment.

Ebola – our response

On the recommendation of Liz, our Convener for International Service, last week’s Club meeting agreed to contribute $1000 towards the construction of an isolation ward at the Children’s Hospital in Bo, a major town in Sierra Leone.  This is a frontline locality in the struggle to limit the spread of this frightful disease.  This project is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Turramurra, in Sydney, which will be the immediate receiver of our donation.

Our new Club website is launched!

Just type rotarygungahlin.com into your browser and a click will take you there.  It’s a new look and somewhat more interactive when it’s fully up and running.  A note has been pasted on the previous website that it not being updated any longer.

A former member, Geoff Windsor, currently in India, has done all the backroom work to bring us to this point (and has likely saved us 1000s of $) and now our job is to use it to show ourselves off to the (cyber) world.  A good site will attract ‘hits’ from new visitors and will encourage them to revisit to find out more – about Gungahlin Rotary and about Rotary in general.

On Monday night, 20th October, we will have a Club Assembly/Board meeting, to be held in the dining room of the Soccer Club.

Last Monday night we welcomed Pam Brown, a professional in the field of mental health, specialising in trauma.  Pam introduced her talk with a broad overview of mental health and gave us a good understanding of the functioning of the brain and then spoke passionately of her work in the area of Eye Movement Desensitization Re-processing Therapy (EMDR).  In recent years trauma specialists working in this area have had significant success with EMDR, particularly for the many people who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  This therapy does not rely on medications, but instead uses a patient’s own rapid, rhythmic eye movements, which are understood to dampen the power of emotionally-charged memories of past traumatic events.  Research in this area arises from the known healing value of rapid eye movements during normal sleep.  Pam also holds a position with the EMDR Association.  Members had many, many questions on this fascinating form of therapy.

The Key 13 October 2014

On Monday night, 13th October, we welcome as Guest Speaker Pam Brown, a professional in the field of mental health, specialising in trauma. Given that it is Mental Health Week, we have asked Pam to speak about this important issue and have also formally invited Aurora Gungahlin. Many members will already know Pam, President Elect of Hall Club.

Last Monday night six of our members and our Assistant Governor, Graeme Kinraid, attended a joint meeting with Young, Aurora Gungahlin and Yass, hosted by the Yass Club. More than 60 members and friends enjoyed a terrific social night, catching up with old friends and making new ones. The four Club Presidents spoke briefly about their Club’s activities, which was enlightening and resulted in lots of discussion.IMG_0260

The idea for a joint meeting came as a result of the transfer earlier this year of our member, Emma, from the Young Club. So we have Emma to thank for bringing us all together. The photo shows Emma and her mother (to her right), enjoying the opportunity to catch up with friends from the Young Club.

On Monday night we need to finalise numbers for the Trivia Night, Monday 27th October, organised by the Rotary Club of Canberra Weston Creek. The cost is $10pp and money will be collected by Liz so that a table can be booked. This is a great opportunity to also bring along family & friends for a fun night for a good cause.

Next week we are not meeting on Monday but instead going to Yass on Tuesday night, 7th October. This will be a social night (& dinner) with the Rotary Clubs of Yass, Young and Aurora Gungahlin.

Time: 7pm. Venue: Yass Soldiers Club, 86 Meehan Street, Yass.

Last Monday night, a small number of members met at the George Harcourt Inn for dinner. As it was a Public Holiday, this social night was arranged to suit those not heading out of town for a long weekend and/or school holidays. From all reports, it was an enjoyable evening. Members were also very pleased to welcome Sandra home and to hear about her recent trip.

A Message from Rotary International President, Gary C K Huang

(extract from Rotary on the Move)

“The more members we have, the more people we can help. A stronger membership base will result in stronger communities,” says Huang.

Huang also hopes his presidential theme, Light Up Rotary, will encourage members to brighten Rotary’s image to the public, which he believes in return will improve member recruitment and retention.

“Being a Rotarian has given me the opportunity to help those in need. As President, I can inspire our members to take advantage of the same opportunity and bring happiness in people’s lives.”

The Key 29 September 2014

Next Monday, 29 September, we are meeting from 6.45pm at the George Harcourt Inn, Nicholls, for a social night with partners.  It is a good opportunity to use this Public Holiday to have a relaxing time together.  Pres. Ian has booked a table for dinner.

Last Monday night
plans needed to be changed as the proposed Guest Speaker,
Mark Scarborough, was unwell but is very keen for us to organise another Monday night.  However, we were delighted to welcome visitors Ian, and also Claire, joined by her sons Christian & Tim.  The visitors were introduced to the Club via our Gungahlin Village stand last Sunday.  Both Pres. Ian and Member Emma agreed that they had a successful few hours at the stand and that the new location worked very well (photo below with Pres. Ian)
