The Key 25th August 2014

Welcome to the latest edition of The Key, the weekly newsletter for Rotary Gungahlin.

Last Monday night we had a very busy and productive Club Assembly/Board Meeting, working through many matters requiring our attention. We also wished Sandra a wonderful holiday and look forward to hearing about her adventures upon her return.

The Board laid out a club diary a few months ahead in order to rebalance and enhance our meeting program.

Upcoming guest speaker next Monday

St John Ambulance and First Aid Training

Our guest speaker will be Gemma Wood from St John Ambulance, who will speak about the organisation, its role in the community and the free first aid training offered. St John Ambulance is internationally recognised as a First Aid Trainer and national medical and technical advisory committees ensure they teach the latest techniques and revise their course content regularly to meet both international and Australian standards. The course she will focus on looks at a range of medical emergencies which we could confront in everyday life and how we should respond.

New Director! Welcome Emma Hales

The resignation from Rotary of a Board Member in June created a casual vacancy, which the Board filled under Bylaw A3, Sect 6 (Casual Vacancies).

Newsflash!

At 3.40pm on Wednesday 27th August make sure you tune into Radio ABC666 to hear Kim Lester interview Pres Ian and also a pre-recorded interview with Sandra. This program is one of a series highlighting the role volunteering plays in our communities.

24th October – World Polio Day the opportunity for our Club to raise community awareness of Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio and to seek their involvement.

Good Luck Nerida and Shane !

Secretary Sandra recently visited PP Nerida to see how life with two young twins is going. They have decided to move to Nowra later in the year and have their house in Amaroo on the market, with an auction this weekend. All is good with them and the twins and the older children are all well. Members and friends should note that their previous phone numbers and email addresses are no longer operative.

Correction: RFS Rotary Vocational Excellence Award

In last week’s edition of The Key the item on our Club’s presentation to the volunteer Rural Fire Service incorrectly referred to Mr Peter Beutel as the Brigade Captain, however Peter is the RFS President and Simon Butt is the Brigade Captain.

Upcoming joint meeting in Yass

Tuesday 7th October Joint Meeting of the Rotary Clubs of Young, Yass and Gungahlin and it will be a Partner’s night. This will be a makeup for us as our Monday meeting is cancelled (public holiday). Members are asked to put it in their forward plans. The venue will in Yass and details are to be confirmed.

Good News-Bad News

The Jamison Trash & Treasure last Sunday was cancelled due to heavy and persistent rain. We were due to do the cleanup and Ian called in at about 11 am and spoke with the Belconnen rep. Both agreed that those still stubbornly trading were not creating enough mess to warrant a cleanup. So Gungahlin Club missed out on money and Ian and Liz missed out on pneumonia.

Be Careful What You Wish For ……Information Table at The G

A few weeks ago the Club decided to seek permission for an information/membership table at The G shopping centre in Gungahlin and members indicated their willingness to help staffing it. Well, we have gained permission and it begins NEXT SATURDAY, and monthly thereafter! Members and Friends are welcome to come along and say hello from about 9.30 – 2pm.
