Play and Learn – Early Childhood Development
In Timor-Leste, early childhood education is a growing priority, and our club has been part of a transformative journey. Partnering with the FOKUPERS NGO, we supported the “Play and Learn” program, which focuses on nurturing young minds through play-based learning.
Despite delays caused by the pandemic, the program flourished and inspired national change. The Timorese Ministry of Education adopted the approach in several communities, including Beto Madohi in Dili, where the program is now known as Escola ba Uma—“School for the Home.”
FOKUPERS developed two wonderful resources: a Teacher’s Guide and a Parent Information Guide. These books are grounded in child development theory and the curriculum of their childcare centre, helping educators and families create joyful, engaging learning environments.
This initiative has not only improved education outcomes but also strengthened community bonds, empowering parents and teachers to support children’s growth with love and creativity.
Hospital Support – Baucau
In the coastal city of Baucau, Horex Hospital plays a vital role in serving a diverse and growing community. Rotary Gungahlin contributed to improving patient care by coordinating the delivery of essential medical equipment. This included high-quality beds and mattresses that support hygiene and therapeutic needs, helping hospital staff maintain better infection control and enhance recovery outcomes.
The pediatric ward received new children’s beds, creating a more cheerful and comforting environment for young patients. These additions have made a meaningful difference in how children experience hospital stays—bringing warmth, colour, and a sense of safety.
We also provided mobility aids such as wheelchairs and walkers, which have empowered patients with disabilities or injuries to regain independence and dignity.
This project was a collaborative effort involving Rotary Clubs from Gungahlin, Hall, Belconnen, Dili, and the Rotary Donations in Kind program. It stands as a testament to the power of international teamwork and the shared commitment to uplifting communities through compassionate service.

Healthy Hearts – Community Centre Restoration
The Association of Healthy Heart Timor-Leste (AFSTL) supports youth in Dili, especially those who have missed out on formal education. It offers literacy, language development, and health education on issues like smoking, alcohol, and disease prevention, helping young people make informed life choices.
With support from Rotary Gungahlin and Canberra Friends of Dili, the AFSTL centre was repaired and repainted, creating a more welcoming and functional space. This transformation has encouraged greater student attendance and engagement, reinforcing our commitment to safe, supportive learning environments.
