International – Sabah Child Education Support (Malaysia)

In the remote and mountainous region of Sabah, East Malaysia—one of the poorest states in the country—many children from disadvantaged communities face significant barriers to accessing education. Rotary Gungahlin is proud to support a transformative initiative that provides care and educational support to around 350 students living in eight youth hostels across the region.

These hostels are more than just places to sleep—they are safe, nurturing environments where children can grow, learn, and dream. Many of these students come from rural villages where schools are far away or inaccessible. The hostels ensure they have a stable home base, with nutritious meals, clothing, toiletries, and other daily essentials that allow them to focus on their studies without worry.

The project also equips students with vital educational tools such as textbooks, computers, internet access, stationery, and school bags. These resources help bridge the digital and educational divide, giving students the confidence and support they need to succeed. For those who show academic promise, the project even supports pathways to tertiary education, opening doors to a brighter future.

Rotary Gungahlin members have been hands-on in their support—helping pack and send a large container filled with bedding, toys, and learning materials to Kota Kinabalu. These items were warmly received and distributed among the hostels, bringing joy and comfort to the children.

A highlight of the year was the “Africa Meets Asia” Dinner and Dance fundraiser—a colourful celebration of culture and community. The event brought people together in a spirit of generosity and global friendship, raising awareness and support for the Sabah project.

This initiative is a shining example of Rotary’s mission in action: building bridges across borders, empowering young lives, and creating opportunities where they’re needed most. It reminds us that even in the most remote corners of the world, hope can flourish when compassion leads the way.
