Raising Funds – to do good
Many Gungahlin residents will probably best know the members of Rotary Gungahlin from the regular BBQ fundraisers outside retail outlets and at community events in Gungahlin, though we do a lot more than turn sausages! We also raise funds through cleaning up after Trash & Treasure and from direct donations. The purpose of this is to support the projects and programs of our club and of Rotary International
Rotarians’ Five Avenues of Service
Club Service – Helping their club to function successfully
Vocational Service – Promoting high ethical standards in business and professions
Community service – Improving the quality of life of local residents
International Service – Advancing international understanding, goodwill and peace
Youth Service – Promoting projects and programs focussed on bring about positive changes in youth and young adults
Our members have been quite involved in a number of projects and activities in Gungahlin and the wider Canberra Region. From sponsoring and hosting international students, volunteering as staff at local community events, helping on community projects such as the Gungahlin BMX dirt jump track, the development of Well Station and the beautification of the foreshore of Yerrabi Pond.
Many of our local activities are focused on supporting youth in the Gungahlin area, through both the local schools and colleges and other projects through partner organisations. In particular we sponsor awards that build and recognise excellence in community service and leadership.
We proudly support local youth to take part in The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), as well as the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF).
For more information about what we do locally, please visit the Community activities webpage.
Internationally, our largest focus is supporting children’s health in the Oceania region, including Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu though Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC).
We also support Shelterbox, the Rotary International supported disaster and humanitarian relief organisation that delivers urgent essentials during major crisis and have provided sponsorship to local school teams undertaking support programs in nearby third world communities.
Another key project we support is End Polio Now, the program supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to completely eradicate Polio.
For more information about these projects including videos, please visit the International Projects webpage.
We are always open to more ideas for other projects and activities to get involved in, both locally in Gungahlin and internationally. If you are involved in something and you think we could help, or just have an idea for something we may be able to support, please contact us and let us know. All ideas are welcome!
